Outflows and shocks in compact radio sources

نویسنده

چکیده

We report some key results from the optical emission line study of a complete sample of compact radio sources. We find strong evidence for jet-driven outflows in the circum-nuclear emission line gas namely: 1) highly broadened and blueshifted emission line components (up to 2000 km s), 2) shock ionised gas (broader, shifted components), 3) consistency in the scales of the emission line gas and the radio source and 4) trends between the maximum outflow velocity and radio source size (and orientation). Full details can be found in Holt (2005).

The Dynamical Interaction of Agn with Their Galaxian Environments

Jet-driven shocks are responsible for an important fraction of the emission of the narrow-line regions (NLRs) in many classes of AGN. However, this cannot explain all observations. It is clear that the remaining sources are photoionised by the active nucleus. The 2-d hydrodynamic models from the RSAA group support an evolutionary scenario whereby the shock-excited NLRs are initially jet-driven ...

Fast outflows in compact radio sources: evidence for AGN-induced feedback in the early stages of radio source evolution

We present intermediate-resolution, wide-wavelength coverage spectra for a complete sample of 14 compact radio sources taken with the aim of investigating the impact of the nuclear activity on the circumnuclear interstellar medium (ISM) in the early stages of radio source evolution. We observe spatially extended line emission (up to ∼20 kpc) in the majority of sources which is consistent with a...

Highly Collimated Jets and Wide-Angle Outflows in HH46/47: New Evidence from Spitzer IR Images

We present new details of the structure and morphology of the jets and outflows in HH46/47 as seen in Spitzer infrared images from IRAC and MIPS, reprocessed using the “HiRes” deconvolution technique. HiRes improves the visualization of spatial morphology by enhancing resolution (to sub-arcsec levels in IRAC bands) and removing the contaminating side lobes from bright sources. In addition to sh...

The interplay between radio jets and ISM in sub-kpc radio sources

This paper reviews the evidence for interaction between radio jets and their environment in small (sub-kpc) and intermediate scale radio sources. Observations of gas (both neutral hydrogen and ionised gas) have shown the presence of fast (> 1000 km/s) outflows likely originating from this interaction. The characteristics of these AGN-driven outflows (e.g. mass outflow rate) indicate that they m...
